Nakheel Tower (~1140m), Dubai

Cityscape Dubai 2008 started today, but Nakheel (owned by the government of Dubai) stole the show revealing plans for Nakheel Harbour & Tower yesterday, 5th of October (press release).

Nakheel Harbour & Tower will be home to over 80,000 people and a workplace for 40,000 more. According to Nakheel, the precinct minimises car use and maximises train, bus and water transportation. The development will cover an area over 270 hectares and include another 40 towers ranging in height from 20 floors to 90 floors (over 300 meters). The final height of Nakheel’s proposed tower (former Al Burj, Tall Tower) is a secret, as is the price. The company would only say it will be more than 1 km tall. The tower and harbour project will take more than 10 years to complete. O’Donnell, CEO of Nakheel, has confirmed that the foundation work has already begun.

Massive schemes are announced as Cityscape 2008 – the largest business-to-business real estate investment and development event in the world – is proceeding. Two other projects with centerpiece skyscrapers are worth mentioning due to their proposed heights: 1 Dubai, part of Jumeirah Gardens (by Meraas Development) and Anara Tower (by Tameer):

1 Dubai

As stock prices collapsed around the world today amid growing fears that the credit crisis would trigger a global recession, it is interesting to see how many projects will be cancelled due to lack of financing.

  • very beauty.. but how about Petronas Twin Tower? 451.9m + 451.9m = 903.8m ?

  • What better way to show how brilliant and creative humans can be. May these projects increase in scale and grandeur; this pushing of the limits is the reason why we are advancing in all aspects, be it construction or medical research.

They are truly wonders that transcend race and creed differences. I challenge anyone not to feel awe when in the presence of such edifices. May the creative and brilliant be unchained….

  • maybe one off the most intresting blogs i ever read.I am beeing amazed with all this dubai projects and i tottaly agree of being hiher an jigher .B ut i didnt like some comments about tailing that dubai tries to be like US some day.. this i a stupid thouht as the level of this city is much better of US .they surely have less homeless people than amerika and why not spending their money to project that could be apealing to touris and in the future as oil run out continues to be rich i love burj al arab and if you search a little in the inernet you wiil see spectacular pics about that esspesially at night ….but what i dont like in this project is the place that they will put al burj as i thout in waterfront of the city( do enyone knows if i am right??) i reallu dont like seeing a lot of buildings near the sea.. • the hightise buildng in dubai now on is very amazing..wish that i can go thre someday

  • I already heard rumours that the company building the Burj Dubai is broke or about to be broke… But these are just rumours you know. But the situation does not seem to get better here yet.

  • It seems this discussion has run out of steam. I guess that leaves me the pleasure of having the last word.

Lest we humans get carried away with all the back patting and self praise over our building prowess, it would behoove us to look to one of nature’s own unheralded feats. No man made structure or engineering marvel will ever, ever come anywhere near achieving the aspect ratio of a humble grass stalk, There!

  • @Wally – No humble grass stalk has ever, ever come anywhere near achieving the ability to accommodate and protect tens of thousands of intelligent beings who cannot survive being jostled about in high winds as the mighty skyscrapers, designed by those same intelligent beings (themselves one of nature’s crowning achievements). There! (Ha ha!)

    Great discussion!
